Gmail antispam is awesome!

My arinet.org email is hosted on Gmail because of it’s speed, reliability, generous space and most of all is it’s awesome antispam. Why is that?

When Gmail detects a dangerous spam such as regarding account info or financial data, it will not only mark it as spam and move it to the spam folder, most importantly is it will also deactivate the dangerous link inside the spam. This dangerous link is a fake link that on the surface (in the email HTML) shows the legitimate URL such as paypal or facebook, but the real link is pointed to the criminal’s website. Often unsuspecting users would just click the link and fall to the trap and the result could be disastrous like hacked facebook or even paypal account.

Your paypal account got suspended? Come on…

Someone is interested in your Microsoft password

See the red warning by Gmail. And the link is also deactivated, preventing users from clicking it.

  1. This is not something special, many – if not most – e-mail clients have this feature for years. For example, I am using alpine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpine_%28e-mail_client%29) a humbly console-based e-mail client which when displaying HTML part of an e-mail will warn when a link have text that suggest different URL. Other – GUI – e-mail clients like SeaMonkey Mail, Thunderbird, and Claws Mail (http://www.claws-mail.org/) have this feature as well.

If some web-based e-mail provider fail to provide this feature, probably just another hint that it is actually safer to use stand-alone e-mail client than to use web-based e-mail in general. 🙂
